Shaped like an ape, its crown white as snow, all four limbs stained crimson, as though it had waded out of a river of blood. They have long said: where the Zhu Yan appears, war follows. Men take it for an ill omen, but they have it backward. It does not herald war. War is waged for it. In The Untamed, every power torn from a beast's heart comes shackled to a lifelong curse. The Zhu Yan's heart is an antidote. Whoever eats it can, with a touch, strip one curse from another, and lift their own as well. Every king and hunter who carries a shackle needs that touch.
