A horse's body, a ram's eyes, four horns, an ox's tail, and the howl of a dog. A beast that matches nothing. Where it appears, the state breeds schemers: slanderers at court, plotters at every door, allies who trusted each other yesterday already scheming in the dark. It never strikes. The moment it appears, men's hearts begin to turn. At first it is only rumour, a flicker of doubt that no one takes to heart. But once suspicion takes root it cannot be pulled out: the trusted become traitors, the men at your table become rivals, and before the meal is done the blades are already drawn beneath it. No one knows what its heart grants the one who takes it, because no one who has eaten it has lived to say. Only this: those around him turn on one another, one by one, first sharp words, then suspicion, then old comrades drawing blades. And he is always the last to fall. When no one is left to distrust, you become your own enemy.
