A bird, yet shaped like a great serpent. Four wings, six eyes. Where it appears, the settlement is seized by dread. Not flood, not war, but dread itself. Its six eyes open all at once and fix on you in silence, and the chill runs through you: the certainty that ruin is coming and there is nowhere left to run. Eat its heart and you gain a fearless nerve. A blade at your throat will not shake you, death at your door will not startle you, and nothing left in the world can put fear in you. And your own gaze inherits its power: meet a weak-willed man's gaze, and a single look can break him where he stands. But this fearlessness cannot be given back. What you should fear, you no longer fear either. Where others turn and flee, you walk in without a flicker. Until the day the thing you did not fear takes your life.
