For Those Who Come After.
Shaped like a crow, with a patterned head, a white beak, and red feet. It carries a single stone out over the sea, drops it, and turns back for another. It will not stop until the sea is filled. It never attacks. Hunters pass overhead and it ignores them; caravans make camp at its feet and it ignores them too. It only carries, drops, turns, and carries again, day after day, year after year, with nothing in its eyes but that sea it will never fill. Because it has never harmed anyone, no one has ever fought it, and so no one knows what eating its heart would grant. Yet this small pale bird has outlasted everything out here, alive longer than anyone can count. No one calls it easy prey: nothing survives this long in the north on luck. Its endless labour looks like grief from a distance. But if you ever mean to kill it and take its heart, understand one thing first. Everything that has tried to end it is already gone. And it is still carrying stones.
