For Those Who Come After.
Shaped like a great eagle, crowned with horns. From its throat comes the cry of a human infant, thin and frightened, the kind of sound no one can walk away from. It weeps deep in the trees like a child left behind. You know better, yet you go anyway. There is no threat in that cry, only something small and helpless waiting to be found. You part the last branches and discover the child has horns. And claws. Eat its heart, and your voice bends the will of others. Your words pass beyond the ear and settle in the heart, drawing the listener toward you against every instinct to flee. He knows death waits ahead, yet his feet carry him on. The more a man owes, the heavier his guilt and the tighter your voice takes hold, for somewhere within himself, he has already accepted the punishment. The strongest lure was never beauty. It was debt.
