Shaped like a rat, but with a hare's head and an elk's body. It barks like a dog, and stranger still, it flies, using its long tail for a wing. It drifts low over the slopes of Mount Danxun, tail swaying, like a dead leaf caught on the wind. When you pass by an Er Shu, it only glances at you once before drifting on, off to find its grass and dream its dreams. For all that, this is the most easily dismissed creature in the wilds, and it carries a great gift. Eat its heart and nothing poisonous can ever harm you again: no insect, no plant, no serpent or scorpion. An enemy can slip poison into your cup, and it will do nothing to you at all. It harms nothing in its whole life, yet it leaves you with nothing to fear from those who would harm you.
形如鼠，却生兔首、麋身。它吠叫如犬，更奇的是，它以尾为翼，凭那条长尾竟能飞起。 它在丹熏之山间低低飞过，尾巴一摆一摆，像一片被风卷起的枯叶。它不猎人，也不避人。你从它身旁走过，它只抬眼看你一下，便又自顾自地飞远，去寻它的草，做它的梦。 可正是这最不起眼的一只，藏着八荒最厚的一份馈赠。食其心者，百毒不侵。虫豸、草木、蛇蝎之毒，一概近你不得。旁人以毒相害，毒入你口，也伤你分毫不得。 它一生不害一物，却让你再不必怕人害。

有獸焉，其狀如鼠，而菟首麋身，其音如獋犬，以其尾飛，名曰耳鼠，食之不䐆，又可以禦百毒。
