For Those Who Come After.
Shaped like an ape, with four ears. They do not catch what stirs nearby; they hear only what is coming. In the wind, in the water, in a footstep in the dark, wherever a scrap of killing intent hides, it hears it first. Those same ears are why nothing has ever caught it. Whenever harm draws close, it slips away a step before the blade falls. Men take it for a coward that bolts at shadows, never knowing it flees not the shadow but the unsheathed blade inside it. Eat its heart and you gain that ability. The blade is still sheathed and you have already turned; the arrow is still on the string and you are already low. You do not know why, only that your body moved first. But you will never know peace again. You can hear the knife in every hand, even the one held by the person you trust most. You slip every blow that ever comes for you and never trust a living soul again.
